I am very excited to welcome you to my new website! My goal is to include a weekly blog on the page as well and this will be my first. I would also encourage you to let me know if there is a topic you would like me to include that would be of interest to you.
These last few days I have had the privilege of travelling to Kelowna for a getaway with a few friends. During my time away, I was fortunate enough to lead my friends in a few yoga sessions. As we were making our way out of savasana, one of my friends came over to me. With a very relaxed look in her eyes she told me how she enjoyed the class. She also told me that she had been doing yoga for many years in various places and had always found savasana to be a very difficult pose. She suffers from low back pain and lying on her back is difficult and challenging. During class I suggested that if lying on your back for savasana was not comfortable, to take the Option of a bent knee savasana. She did opt for that and the whole pose was instantly transformed for her from one of discomfort to one of bliss.
As a yoga teacher this was music to my ears. It is also the reason why options are very important when instructing a group. Every body is very different and comes with its own challenges. We have lived in our bodies for a long time and we develop patterns and habits that often lead us down a path of tightness and pain. We also engage in activities that lead us towards injury, and this just happens. The beauty of yoga is that there is no “right” or “correct” way to practice – it is what works for you. I was so pleased that my friend, who suffers from lower back pain, could find some relief in savasana which is a beautiful pose and should be restful not painful.
